What is the website to download and install SofTest?
SMU law students login to their ExamSoft account at http://www.examsoft.com/smulaw
to download and install SofTest.
What is my ExamSoft account login?
Your Exam Taker Student ID is your SMU ID number without the hyphen. To find your Exam Taker Password, login to the Exam PINs search using your SMU student ID and password and scroll down to the bottom of the Exam PIN results web page.
Do I need to re-install SofTest this semester if I already have it installed from a previous year?
Students must re-install SofTest once each academic school year. The new version of SofTest is available every Fall Semester. Students pay a yearly license fee the first time they install SofTest during the current academic school year. SofTest may be re-installed, if needed, during the academic school year without paying another license fee.
When does my SofTest license expire?
SofTest licenses expire August 31st of each year.
Do I need to re-install SofTest each semester?
No, as long as you can successfully take a Mock Exam to ensure SofTest is still working properly on your laptop.
What if SofTest prompts me to re-install when I launch it?
If you launch SofTest and are prompted to install it, or to install SofTest updates, you must allow SofTest or SofTest updates to install and re-register SofTest before it will work.
Is the ExamSoft Exam Taker password and the Exam PIN number the same?
No. Your Exam PIN number is your unique "personal identification number" (PIN) for use in lieu of your name, SMU ID number, or social security number on scantron sheets and paper blue books to identify yourself. Your Exam PIN number is automatically entered in the "Exam ID" blank when you select your exam in SofTest. Your Exam Taker Password is used to log into your Exam Taker account at http://www.examsoft.com/smulaw

Does the Law School provide laptops for law students to install SofTest to take their laptop exams on?
No. The Law School does not provide laptops for students to take laptop exams on.
Can I install SofTest on a borrowed laptop to take exams?
Yes, as long as the laptop meets the following criteria.
How do I use an USB flash drive to backup exam files to after my exam(s)?
- Another student's laptop can be used only if they do not have SofTest installed to take their exams on.
- The laptop must meet the minimum system requirements to install SofTest.
- You must have Administrative level rights on the laptop you are using to be able to install and run SofTest to take laptop exams.
- Business laptops with encryption and without Administrative level rights may not be used to take laptop exams.
- If you borrow a laptop to take your exams on, you must make a backup copy of your exam and log files before returning the laptop; and, SofTest must not be removed from the laptop until you have received your grades.

Can I use SofTest on a netbook, tablet computer or iPad?
ExamSoft does not support tablet or convertible devices other than Surface Pro 1, 2 & 4 (Non-Pro Surface devices are NOT supported) or Surface 3 (Pro and Non-Pro device ARE supported).
When I attempt to download my exam file(s), one of them is missing. What should I do?
Check to see if your exam is listed in the current semester's Permissible Laptop Exams
. If your exam is not permissible to take on laptop, it will not be listed. If your exam is listed as a permissible laptop exam, but not available for you to download to your laptop, send an e-mail to email@example.com
What if I missed the SofTest installation and registration deadline and have not downloaded my exam file(s) to my laptop?
You will be able to download and install SofTest after the registration deadline. However, you will not be able to download the required exam file(s) to your laptop without authorization from Dean Yeager.
What if I am prepared to take laptop exams and decide to handwrite some or all of them instead?
If you have installed SofTest and downloaded your exam files to your laptop (as required), send an email with the course with the professor name for the exam(s) you decided to handwrite to firstname.lastname@example.org
If my laptop has a hardware/software problem during the laptop exam registration period and I cannot install SofTest, what do I do?
If you have a hardware/software issue during the laptop exam registration period and need assistance, notify the ExamSoft Support
as soon as possible before the laptop exam registration deadline.
What do I do if my laptop stops working after I have completed all requirements to take laptop exams?
If your laptop stops working after installing SofTest, or during the exam period, please send a message to or email@example.com
and request a time for them to assist you in a resolution.
When I turn on my laptop to take a laptop exam, Windows Updates are installing. What do I do?
If Windows Updates begin installing when you turn on your laptop to launch SofTest, you must wait until the Windows Updates installation completes before proceeding or you may encounter a serious issue. Also, if you are prompted to restart your laptop after the installation, you must allow your laptop to restart. We highly recommend that you disable Windows Updates before you install SofTest and re-enable Windows Updates as soon as the exam period has ended. This will prevent this issue, as well as prevent a possible SofTest conflict after you install it.
After I complete my exam, how long do I have to upload my exam file?
Students are required to wait until their exam file automatically uploads before leaving the exam room after each exam. If your exam file does not automatically upload after you close your exam and click the "Exit" button on the big, yellow SofTest screen, notify the Laptop Exam Assistant in the exam room for assistance.
