"After 30 years spent in courtrooms in Texas, ... I am comfortable that SMU's emphasis on how to think as opposed to what to think has been instrumental in procuring justice for a number of deserving clients."

The Air and Space Lawyer Student Writing Competition

Guidelines

  1. The Program: Rolls Royce North America, Inc. ("Rolls Royce") has been approved by the Governing Board of the ABA to establish an annual Law Student writing competition with a $5,000 prize awarded to the winner. The winning article will be published in the fall issue of The Air and Space Lawyer (the "Journal"). The first prize would be awarded fall 2008.
  2. The Sponsor: The name for the writing competition will be: The Air and Space Lawyer Student Writing Competition. Rolls-Royce will fund the annual $5,000 prize and will be listed in the communications regarding the competition as the prize sponsor. Rolls-Royce is the US corporate headquarters for Rolls-Royce plc, a global company providing power for use on land, at sea and in air. The Rolls-Royce Group is a world-leading power systems and services company, with a balanced business portfolio operating in four global markets--civil aerospace, defense aerospace, marine and energy.

Rules for Competition

  1. Schedule: The competition announcement will be issued at the Update Conference in January 2008. Student submissions will be due by March 31st 2008. The winner will be announced at the fall conference with publication of the article in the fall edition of the Air and Space Lawyer. The specific dates may vary from year to year.
  2. Eligibility: The competition is open to any matriculated law school student in good standing, over the age of 18, who is attending an ABA-accredited law school within the United States and its possessions. [All authors must be members of the American Bar Association Law Student Division at the time of submitting the entry.] Employees of the ABA, Rolls-Royce and its respective affiliates and immediate family or household members of those employees are not eligible to participate.
  3. Selection: A panel appointed by the Air and Space Lawyer editorial board, comprised of members of the editorial and governing boards and a representative from Rolls-Royce (the "Selection Board") will select the winning submissions. Submitted articles will be judged on the following criteria: relevance, timeliness, and importance of the selected topic; organization; quality of analysis; quality of research; and quality of the overall writing. Submitted articles will be judged anonymously. The Selection Board reserves the right not to award any prizes if the Selection Board determines that no entries are of sufficient quality to merit recognition. ABA staff will notify the winner(s) of their selection.
  4. Topics: The Air and Space Lawyer editorial board will include suggested topics in the competition announcement; however, students are free to select a topic relevant to the aerospace industry. Entrants must submit their own original article. Failure to submit an original article will result in disqualification and the selection of a new winner. Submitted articles must have been written after January 2008 and must never have been published in any other medium or law school publication. All expenses involved in preparing and submitting an article are the entrant's responsibility.
  5. Length: Essays must be submitted on standard 8.5 x 11 inch paper; double-spaced and not exceed 4000 words, including endnotes. All margins must equal one-inch.
  6. Submitting Articles: Entries must be postmarked on or before March 31, 2008 and must be submitted to:

Submitted articles will not be returned.
