Office of Student Affairs and Academic Services

One of my favorite times of the year is August, when some of the brightest first-year law students in the country come to SMU for new student orientation.  They are soon joined by returning J.D. students with varying backgrounds from all over the United States and international LL.M. students -- graduates of foreign law schools here to study the American legal system and interact with their American classmates. These students, along with our remarkable faculty and staff, make up the wonderful community of scholars at SMU Dedman Law.

The environment at SMU Dedman Law is collegial and supportive.  Students are motivated to help each other, whether that means sharing class notes or forming study groups.  Through our Inns of Court program, first-year students connect on a weekly basis with fellow classmates, faculty, student leaders, career advisors, and alumni for a community experience that extends throughout their time at the law school and beyond graduation.

And at SMU Dedman Law, our students are individuals -- not numbers.  First-year law students are assigned a career counselor when they arrive. Their counselor gets to know them personally and assists them throughout law school and until they secure their first permanent post-graduate job.

I personally invite you to contact me if you have any questions about your law school academic performance, or if there are any personal matters impacting your ability to perform and succeed in law school.

Meet SMU Dedman Law’s Dean of Students

Mr. Yeager received his Juris Doctor degree from SMU Dedman School of Law in 1993.  He also holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from SMU.

Before returning to SMU, Mr. Yeager was in private practice for 16 years, first at Jones Day and then as general counsel of a private financial services company.  He is the co-author of INSIDE COUNSEL -- PRACTICES, STRATEGIES AND INSIGHTS (West 2015), with Professor Marc I Steinberg, and the Faculty Supervisor for SMU Dedman Law’s Corporate Counsel Externship Program.  His wife Amy, also an SMU Dedman Law alum, is Senior Vice President & General Counsel – North Texas for Baylor Scott & White Health.  They have two high-school aged children.

Academic Services
We know that law students are faced with numerous questions about their academic pursuits.  Our Office of Academic Services assists students with course registration, enrollment verification, scheduling, examinations, degree audits, graduation applications, etc. The office also supports faculty by scheduling classrooms, posting first day of class assignments, posting grades, and is the link between the academic policies of the institution and faculty and students.

Student Organizations
Part of your learning experience includes what happens outside the classroom.  I encourage you to become involved in our Student Bar Association and our 40+ student organizations.  Getting involved helps you expand your network, learn about different practice areas, and develop your leadership skills.
