Petition to Study Away

GUIDELINES:

SUMMER SCHOOL/WINTER INTERIM SESSION: While enrolled at the Dedman School of Law, students may earn up to a total of 10 credit hours at other ABA-approved law schools outside the Dallas-Fort Worth area during the summer and/or winter interim terms.

ACADEMIC SEMESTER/YEAR: In extraordinary circumstances, a student may be granted permission to attend another ABA-approved law school for his or her final term or year of law school while still receiving an SMU degree. Permission will not be granted in the absence of a showing of compelling personal circumstances that require a student's relocation.

COURSE APPROVAL:  All courses taken at another ABA-approved law school for the purpose of receiving credit at the Dedman School of Law school must be approved by the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs prior to the start of the term. 

CREDIT:  Credit will not be awarded for courses taken at another ABA-approved law school in which the student earns a grade below "C" or the equivalent.

REQUIRED COURSES:  In general, all required courses (including Professional Responsibility, Constitutional Law II, a general writing course, an edited writing course, and all first-year courses) must be completed at the SMU Dedman School of Law.

STUDY ABROAD PROGRAMS:  If requesting permission to attend another ABA-approved study abroad program, a complete description of the program and courses to be offered must be attached to this petition. 

TO APPLY FOR PERMISSION TO STUDY AWAY, COMPLETE THIS FORM AND RETURN IT TO THE ASSISTANT DEAN FOR STUDENT AFFAIRS.  IF APPROVED, THE REGISTRAR'S OFFICE WILL PRODUCE A LETTER OF PERMISSION FOR THE SCHOOL/PROGRAMS TO WHICH YOU ARE APPLYING.   THE LETTER WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR PICK UP IN THE REGISTRAR'S OFFICE.
