SMU DEDMAN LAW PRESTIGIOUS MOOT COURT COMPETITION RENAMED LYNN PINKER COX & HURST MOOT COURT COMPETITION
Formerly Known as Howie & Sweeney Moot Court Competition
January 27, 2017
DALLAS (SMU) – Thanks to a generous gift from the nationally recognized trial law firm Lynn Pinker Cox & Hurst, LLP, SMU Dedman School of Law’s prestigious moot court competition, formerly known as the Howie & Sweeney Moot Court Competition, will be renamed the Lynn Pinker Cox & Hurst Moot Court Competition.
SMU Dedman School of Law is profoundly grateful for the many years of support from the preeminent law firm Howie & Sweeney LLP, which closed in 2011 after the death of renowned Dallas trial lawyer John Howie in 2002. The Law School is delighted to have such an outstanding firm as its new partner for this important competition.
Each year esteemed members of the state and federal judiciary gather at SMU Dedman Law to hear arguments from the school’s best moot court attorneys. This competition, organized by the SMU Board of Advocates, provides a great opportunity for participants to hone brief-writing skills and improve appellate advocacy capabilities. The SMU Law Board of Advocates Moot Court team is ranked #2 nationally.
“Moot Court is a wonderful way for law students to get real-world, practical training. I was involved in moot court competitions when I was in law school at SMU and it was such a positive experience that it motivated me to be a trial lawyer,” said Mike Lynn ’75, a partner at Lynn Pinker Cox & Hurst. “Our firm is delighted to be partnering with my alma mater and being involved with such a well-respected program that helps students grow in the practice of law.”
“We are very proud of the reputation of this moot court competition and of our students,” added Jennifer Collins, Judge James Noel Dean and Professor of Law. “We look forward to the new partnership with Lynn Pinker Cox & Hurst, and the wonderful opportunity to be associated with one of the most successful litigation boutiques in Texas.”
