Professor Eads Receives State Bar of Texas President's Award

Linda Eads, associate professor at the Dedman School of Law, was named as the recipient of the 2006-2007 President’s Award, presented by the State Bar of Texas.  The award is given annually to a member of the State Bar who is deemed to have rendered outstanding service to that organization.  Eads was recognized for her work on the Texas Disciplinary Rules of Professional Conduct Committee.

“I am very honored to receive this award,” Eads said.  “However, I really do think that I received the award partly as a surrogate for the Committee that I chaired.  This committee--Texas Disciplinary Rules of Professional Conduct Committee--had on it exceptional lawyers whose dedication was inspiring.”

This is not the first time Eads has been recognized for her dedication.  Since joining the faculty at the Dedman School of Law in 1986, she has been named an SMU University Scholar and Teacher of the Year, and has received the Don M. Smart Award for Excellence in Teaching three times, most recently in 2006.

“I think it is very important that the legal academy and law professors be involved in reforming and improving law, rather than only commenting on it,” Eads said.  “My work chairing this Committee allowed me to make an important contribution to Texas law.”

From 1999 to 2000, she served as the Deputy Attorney General for the State of Texas.  While in that position, she participated in the appeal to the 5th Circuit of the decision in Hopwood v. Texas, as well as in the landmark agreement between Aetna and Texas regarding HMO practices in the state.

Eads teaches in the areas of professional responsibility, evidence, trial advocacy, constitutional law, criminal tax fraud, and women and the law.
