Regional Finals of the European Law Moot Court Competition
On February 15-16 (Friday-Saturday) the Dedman School of Law will host the Regional Finals of the European Law Moot Court (ELMC) Competition. This international competition began in 1988 with the purpose of raising awareness of EU law and promoting contacts among law students from across Europe. The competition has grown in recent years to include teams from not only EU Member States but also from Central and East European countries, Canada, Australia, and the United States. Regional finals have been held in various cities throughout the world, including: Thessaloniki, Exeter, Vienna, Bruges, Maastricht, Stockholm, Toulouse, Lisbon, Parma, Copenhagen, Budapest, Warsaw, Durham, Tallinn, Tartu, Prague, Edinburgh, Uppsala, Florence, Basel, Cologne, Zagreb, Pécs, Istanbul, Kiev, Helsinki, Paris, Madrid, Bratislava, Vilnius, Riga, and San Francisco.
This year, 48 teams advanced to the regional finals and will compete at one of four host universities in mid-February/early March. In addition to SMU, the venues are: Maribor, Slovenia (hosted by the University of Maribor); Valencia, Spain (hosted by Universidad CEU Cardenal Herrera Oria); and Bangor, Wales (hosted by Bangor University School of Law, University of Wales). Although SMU is not competing in the ELMC this year, we are pleased to be one of the host schools for the regionals. The All European Final will be held at the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg in March.
