There is no principle that requires the Court to decide only those cases that have far-reaching results across the entire nation. In any event, a finding that the state was required to protect Joshua would implicate policies across the nation (at the state and federal levels). Go back and consider why the majority said that this is a job for the legislature and not the courts.
