Professor Carpenter received his B.A. degree in history from Yale College and his J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School, where he was editor-in-chief of the University of Chicago Law Review. After serving as a law clerk for Fifth Circuit Judge Edith Jones, he practiced at the firms Vinson & Elkins LLP in Houston, and at Howard, Rice, Nemerovski, Canady, Falk & Rabkin, P.C. in San Francisco. Prior to joining SMU, Professor Carpenter taught for 16 years at the University of Minnesota, where he served as a Distinguished University Teaching Professor and the Earl R. Larson Professor of Civil Rights and Civil Liberties Law. He is currently the Judge William Hawley Atwell Chair of Constitutional Law.
Professor Coleman has two degrees from Harvard University — a J.D. and B.A. in biology. Before joining SMU, he was on the faculty at the University of Calgary, where he taught at both the law school and the business school, and at Harvard Law School, where he served as a Climenko Fellow and Lecturer on Law. Professor Coleman’s scholarship addresses regulation of North American energy companies. He currently teaches Oil & Gas Law, Energy Law, International Petroleum Transactions, and Energy Transport and Trade.
Professor Stephen Shute is the Head of the School of Law, Politics and Sociology at the University of Sussex. He formerly served at the University of Birmingham and Corpus Christi College, Oxford. Professor Shute's academic work focuses on criminal law and criminal justice. He is often cited in numerous scholarly books and articles.
N. Jane Hanna
Ms. Hanna has 20 years experience teaching law at Oxford University specializing in Constitutional and Administrative Law and has a special interest in medical legal issues. She has 13 years experience teaching the British Legal system for Southern Methodist University and Georgia University during their summer courses in Oxford. She began pursuing evolving interests in lobbying, politics and research in 1997. Jane Hanna is a member of the District Council of the Vale of White Horse.
Fellow in Law
Mr. Barber is the Senior Law Fellow at Trinity College. He was formerly Law Fellow at Brasenose College. He specializes in public law, in particular constitutional theory. He has lectured on constitutional issues in America, Canada, Spain and Germany. He teaches Constitutional Law, Administrative Law and Jurisprudence for the College.
Mr. Bamforth, who holds a BCL and MA (Oxford), is a Fellow in Law at Queen's College. He has previously worked at UCL and Cambridge. In 2003-4, he was a Hauser Global Research Fellow at New York University. Since October 2006, he has been an elected member of Oxford's University Council.
SMU employs an Oxford Student who is available, as needed, day or night. The assistant has an office at University College and lives on site.
