J.D. DEGREE

The SMU Dedman School of Law offers full-time and part-time J.D. programs awarding the J.D. degree, which is the law degree that permits graduates to apply to take state bar exams.  The flexibility of the J.D. curriculum, combined with an extensive array of basic and advanced courses and seminars, provides the opportunity for J.D. students to gain considerable depth of knowledge in the area of law, science, and innovation.  Outside the classroom, moreover, J.D. students have access to an impressive and diverse set of faculty with significant expertise in the area of law, science, and innovation, as well as numerous organizations and activities providing further opportunities for learning and networking in the field.  In short, the J.D. programs provide rich opportunities for students interested in law, science, and innovation.  For more information on these J.D. programs, visit our J.D. PROGRAMS page.

In addition to the J.D. degree, the SMU Dedman School of Law offers students the opportunity to combine the J.D. degree with a Masters of Business Administration (M.B.A.) or a Masters of Arts (M.A.) in Economics.  For more information on these joint degree programs, visit our JOINT DEGREES page.

LL.M. DEGREE

The SMU Dedman School of Law offers the LL.M. degree to both national and international students.

The general LL.M. program offers law graduates an opportunity to broaden their backgrounds in certain specialized areas of law by enrolling in advanced courses and seminars and by engaging in specialized research.  The numerous advanced courses and seminars focused on the intersection of law, science, and innovation, as well as the extensive faculty in these areas, provide rich opportunities for students interested in law, science, and innovation.  For more information, visit our MASTER OF LAWS (GENERAL) page.

The primary goal of the international LL.M. program for foreign law school graduates is to enhance the student’s legal skills so that he or she may become a more effective lawyer and member of society.  More than 2,000 international graduates of the SMU Dedman School of Law from more than 80 countries now occupy prominent positions in government, legal practice, business, the judiciary, and legal education around the world.  For more information, visit our MASTER OF LAWS FOR FOREIGN LAW SCHOOL GRADUATES page.

S.J.D. DEGREE

The S.J.D. degree is the highest postgraduate law degree offered by the SMU Dedman School of Law.  The S.J.D. is primarily a research and writing degree (as opposed to a course-oriented degree such as the LL.M. degree) during which the S.J.D. candidate conducts extensive postgraduate-level legal research with a view toward submitting an acceptable doctoral dissertation of publishable quality within a five-year period.  For more information, go HERE.
