Conferences and Symposia
Each year the Tsai Center organizes and holds various conferences and symposia directed to the intersection of law, science, and innovation. In addition, the Tsai Center welcomes various groups holding their own conferences at the SMU Dedman School of Law.
Annual Symposium on Emerging Intellectual Property Issues
For the last fourteen years, the SMU Dedman School of Law has held an annual “Symposium on Emerging Intellectual Property Issues.” These symposia have focused on a variety of topics: In 2011, the symposium was entitled “The Eastern District of Texas and Patents.” In 2012, the Symposium addressed “The America Invents Act.” In 2013, the Symposium focused on “The Federal Circuit and Patent Law,” while in 2014 the focus shifted to “The Supreme Court and Intellectual Property Law.” In 2015, the Symposium addressed “The Future of Innovation and Intellectual Property.” In 2016, the Symposium sought to confront the topic of "Intellectual Property and Social Justice."

Annual SMU Science and Technology Law Review Symposium

The SMU Science and Technology Law Review also holds an annual symposium addressing a hot topic in the field of law and technology. In 2014, the symposium addressed the law of social media. 2015's symposium focused on cyber security. In 2016, the SMU Science and Technology Law Review co-hosted a Food Law Forum with Strasburger & Price, LLP and Michigan State University.
Other Conferences and Symposia
The Tsai Center also welcomes outside groups wishing to hold their own conferences at the law school. These groups have included the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, which has held multiple events at the law school, and the American Intellectual Property Lawyers Association (AIPLA), which held an Electronic and Computer Patent Law Summit at the law school in the summer of 2015. Another recent example of a conference held at the law school is the Food Law Forum held in the spring of 2015.
