Student Affairs

Welcome To our current students, we are pleased that you have chosen to attend SMU Dedman School of Law. To prospective students, we are excited that you are considering joining the law school student body for your legal education. We know that your choice of law school is one of the most significant decisions you must make in furtherance of your career and life goals. The Office of Student Affairs exists to help you succeed in law school and to address the issues that students face during what we know can be both an exciting and challenging journey. Students are expected to conduct themselves in accordance with the highest standards of ethics and with respect for faculty, staff and each other. Students at the law school must comply with the Code of Professional Responsibility (Student Honor Code) as well as the University Student Code of Conduct.

The rules and regulations governing the law school, such as graduation requirements and grading policies, can be found in the Law School Catalog for each entering class. It is the responsibility of each student to refer to and, unless otherwise noted, comply with the requirements of the catalog in effect at the time they matriculate. Students should consult the catalog when they have questions about policies and procedures.

The law school provides various academic support services to students including an Academic Skills Assistance Program (ASAP). The Office of Services for Students with Disabilities works with students with learning differences and helps address appropriate accommodations.

The law school is very proud of its commitment to public service. All JD students are required to complete at least 30 hours of public service in order to graduate. Students interested in public service also can apply for one of the many public service externships.

Students in the law school participate in a wealth of student activities. The Student Bar Association and numerous other student organizations offer programs and activities of interest to our diverse student body. They also provide opportunities for leadership and service to the school and the community.
