Below are links to forms and petitions used by the Registrar's Office. Please return completed forms or petitions to the Law School Registrar's Office in Storey Hall, room 125, e-mail to lawregis@smu.edu, or fax to 214-768-4064.

Directed Research Form
The Directed Research Form requires approval from the faculty advisor.

Evening Student Petition for Full-Time Hours
JD students in the evening program may petition to register for more than 11 hours in a given semester after the completion of the second semester of law school. This petition must be approved by Dean Camp.  Students that are approved for full-time status will remain in the evening program and still be ranked with evening students. 

Letter Request Form
The Letter Request Form may be completed and turned into the Registrar's Office for preparation of any of the following letters:

  • Letter verifying that you are currently enrolled
  • Letter verifying that you are in good standing
  • Letter verifying that you were previously enrolled
  • Letter verifying that you are in good standing and have permission to transfer (This letter includes your current gpa and the class percentile that you fall under)
  • Letter verifying that you are in good standing and have permission to study away (The Petition to Study Away form must be completed and approved by Dean Camp before this letter will be processed)
  • Letter certifying that you have graduated from SMU Dedman School of Law
  • Letter verifying the class percentile that you fall under
  • Letter verifying your class rank (This letter can only be processed after graduation) Keep in mind that August and December graduates will not have a specific class rank until the spring semester following their graduation.
  • Other letters upon request

Mock Trial/Moot Court/ BOA Registration
This form requires approval before submitting to Registrar's Office.  Competitions must be completed before registering for credit.

Petition to Study Away
The Petition to Study Away requires approval from Dean Camp. A letter of good standing will be processed once approval has been obtained.

Petition to Take Graduate Level Courses
This petition requires approval from Dean Camp.

Request to Withdraw From a Course
The request to withdrawal form requires approval from the instructor of the course that you are withdrawing from. If you are requesting to withdraw from a first year required course you must also obtain approval from Dean Camp.
