On May 23, 2009, Somanahalli Mallah Krishna ‘59, a former LL.M. student here at SMU Dedman School of Law, was appointed Indian Minister for External Affairs and a member of the upper house of the Parliament of India, the Rajya Sabha. He is originally from Karnataka, in the southern region of India. Krishna is regarded as one of the most highly educated Chief Ministers from his home country, graduating in 1959 with a Masters of Comparative Law, an International LL.M. degree offered at SMU Dedman School of Law. Before his recent appointment as India's Foreign Minister, he held a position as the Chief Minister of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly.
SMU Dedman School of Law maintains a highly prestigious international alumni base, with graduates in some of the top positions in business, legal practice, the judiciary, and government. Krishna's recent appointment is further evidence of that.
