Message from Dean John B. Attanasio - Wednesday, April 27, 2011

It is with great sadness that I inform you that Professor Dan Shuman, former Professor of Law at SMU Dedman School of Law passed away Monday night at his home.

Dan was the inaugural M.D. Anderson Foundation Endowed Professor of Health Law at the law school and a member of the faculty for more than 33 years, teaching torts, evidence, law and social science, and mental health law.  Dan was regarded by his peers and colleagues as an expert in the field of Mental Health Law.  Prior to joining the faculty of the law school, he served as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Arizona and a Legal Services attorney in Tucson, Arizona.

He recently received the 2011 Guttmacher Award from the American Psychiatric Association for the best new work in law and psychiatry.  This is the second time Dan had received this award.  The first award was received in 1988.

Services will be held at the Lefkowitz Chapel at Temple Emanu-El at 8500 Hillcrest Road (northeast corner of Hillcrest and Northwest Highway) on Thursday, April 28, 2011 at 10:00 a.m.

The Law School family has suffered a great loss and our thoughts and prayers are with the Shuman family right now.

John B. Attanasio
