Arranged by adjunct faculty member Wilson Chu, Cuban spoke to the lucky group of law students about his entrepreneurial strategies in sports, business, and entertainment. Cuban owns the Dallas Mavericks, Landmark Theatres and Magnolia Pictures. He is chairman of the HDTV cable network AXS TV and co-owner of 2929 Entertainment.
 

Following a discussion on corporate/entrepreneurial planning, students bubbled with questions about Cuban’s role in the ABC television series Shark Tank. Cuban says his life experiences in business and sports have helped him identify with the show’s budding entrepreneurs, all hoping for investments in their business or product.
 

Robert Hart ’86 began working with Mark Cuban on a small real estate deal, and never expected the routine business transaction to evolve into the general counsel position at a major entertainment enterprise. From the purchase of homes, to jets, to the Dallas Mavericks, Hart said, “Staying up with Mark Cuban is an every-day learning experience.” A feat, he claims, that would not be possible without his legal education at SMU.
 
In his August 14, 2012 welcome to incoming SMU Dedman Law students, Hart encouraged the group of 1Ls and 1Es to use their legal education to acquire depth in more than one area and to seek a breadth of knowledge in a variety of subject matters.
