On April 3, 2012, SMU Dedman School of Law will host the spring meeting of the United States Judicial Conference Advisory Committee on Evidence Rules.  The Advisory Committee is composed of judges, practitioners, and evidence scholars who have been appointed by the Chief Justice of the United States to carry on a continuous study of the operation and effect of the Federal Rules of Evidence.  The Advisory Committee evaluates proposals for amendments to the Evidence Rules, circulates drafts of proposed amendments to the bench and bar, revises in light of public comments, and then transmits the revised proposals through a Standing Committee to the Judicial Conference (a supervisory and administrative arm of the federal courts), which in turn recommends changes to the Supreme Court.  Recently, the Advisory Committee completed a top-to-bottom restyling initiative to make the Federal Rules of Evidence simpler, easier to read, and easier to understand without changing their substance. The Advisory Committee is chaired by Chief Judge Sidney A. Fitzwater of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas.  Its Reporter is Dan Capra, the Reed Professor of Law at Fordham University School of Law.  The meeting is open to the public, and faculty and students are encouraged to attend.
