Welcome to SMU Dedman School of Law. As you navigate our website, I hope you will gain some insight into the privileges and opportunities that a legal education at SMU can provide. Our selective admissions process creates a small, close-knit student body, with students enjoying an environment of constructive competition and camaraderie. The law school is situated on a beautiful tree-lined campus in an upscale residential neighborhood located just minutes from the heart of downtown Dallas.
Our Faculty. Our faculty is comprised of highly talented, distinguished scholars who are dedicated to teaching and publishing. Our faculty members are leaders in their fields and have authored a wide variety of books and hundreds of law review articles. In addition to their outstanding academic and scholastic credentials, virtually all of our faculty members had practical experience prior to their teaching careers, creating an invaluable link between legal theory and the reality of legal practice. As a result, SMU Dedman School of Law enjoys an international reputation of distinction, with its graduates practicing in every state and in many foreign countries.
Our Student Body. We pride ourselves on a student body that is as rich and diverse as the courses it studies. Our students come from a variety of backgrounds and hail from numerous locations throughout the United States. Our J.D. students have the opportunity to interact with international LL.M. students from all over the world. We strive to satisfy every student’s interests by offering a variety of programs ranging from award-winning moot court and mock trial teams, to an active Student Bar Association, to five nationally-respected law journals. Additionally, our summer program in Oxford, England gives students an international view of the global legal environment. Through these programs, we create a community of students who are intelligent, confident, and motivated to achieve legal excellence.
Our Community. In addition to being diverse, intelligent, and hardworking, our students are also engaged with the community. We pride ourselves on our comprehensive clinical program, which provides free specialized legal services to members of the Dallas community. Additionally, each student at our law school serves the community by completing thirty hours of law-related community service prior to graduation. By providing these services, our students get valuable hands-on experience and encouragement towards developing a life-long commitment to public service.
I invite you to visit Dallas, interact with our students, and experience our school in a way that words and pictures can only suggest. Thank you for taking time to get to know us better, and we wish you the best in your pursuit of the noble profession of law.
